How our college football predictions work

We built a college football model over 7,884 FBS games spanning eleven seasons, graded on real opening and closing prices. The most useful thing it told us was negative: the closing line beats our model at projecting a final score. Our total projection missed by around 14 points on average; the market's closing number missed by around 12.5. So we stopped trying to out-predict the close, and started using the model for what it is genuinely good at — spotting which opening totals are set too high.

Three strategies cleared our bar, and all three are unders taken at the opening number. The largest is the model-versus-opening under: when our projected total lands at least three points below the opening total, the under has been profitable in every season we tested, across roughly 155 qualifying games a year. The second is the early-season home-favourite under, confined to weeks one and two, when offences are rusty — new quarterbacks, new schemes, poor timing — while totals stay anchored to offseason expectations. It fades by week three, so we stop taking it. The third is the wind under at outdoor venues, where the opening total has not yet priced the forecast.

College football suits this approach better than the NFL does. There are far more games, the market cannot price them all equally carefully, and opening totals are set high and drift down through the week. That is a structural inefficiency, not an information advantage — which is precisely why it has persisted across seasons instead of being arbitraged away.

How we decide what to publish

Every strategy is held to a worst-season standard: it has to be profitable in the bad years, not merely on average. That single rule disqualifies most of what looks strong in a back-test, and it is the main reason our published set is small. We also check that a new edge is genuinely distinct from the ones we already run rather than the same effect wearing a different name. When a rule fails that test, it does not get published, however good the headline number looks.

College football picks FAQ

Are your college football picks free?

Yes. During our free beta, members get every college football pick with the full model numbers, no card required. The settled record is public to everyone on the ledger.

When do college football picks post?

Early in the week, at the opening number. Our testing found the college football edge lives in the opening total and largely disappears by kickoff, so posting late would mean posting nothing worth having.

Which college football markets do you cover?

Game totals. Three separate under strategies cleared our testing; nothing on the spread or moneyline did, so we publish none.

How many college football picks are there each week?

Considerably more than our NFL slate — college football has far more games, and our largest strategy qualifies on roughly 155 games a season. Most games still get no pick.

How do I know your college football record is real?

Every pick is written to a public, hash-chained ledger before kickoff and settled in the open afterward — wins and losses in the same font size. Change any past result and the hash chain visibly breaks.
