NRFI and YRFI ask one question about a baseball game: does anyone score in the first inning? Here is what the two terms mean, what drives the answer, and how to read the price on it.
What NRFI and YRFI mean
NRFI stands for No Run First Inning: neither team scores in the top or the bottom of the first. YRFI, Yes Run First Inning, is the opposite and is settled the moment any run crosses the plate in the first. The whole question is decided within about twenty minutes of first pitch, which is a big part of why it is so popular.
Because the answer depends on just two half-innings, it leans heavily on a small number of things: the two starting pitchers, the first few hitters in each lineup, and the conditions at the park that day.
What drives first-inning scoring
Starting pitchers matter most. Some are sharp from the first pitch and some take an inning to settle, and that difference shows up clearly in first-inning numbers over a season.
The top of the order matters next. The first three or four hitters are, by design, a team's best, and they are the ones who bat in the first inning every game.
The park and the weather add the rest. Warm air and a small park carry the ball, cold air and wind blowing in knock it down, and altitude changes everything, so the same two pitchers can produce a different first-inning picture in a different park.
How to read a first-inning price
Every price implies a probability. A price of minus 120 on NRFI implies about a 55 percent chance that the first inning is scoreless; plus 120 implies about 45 percent. Comparing that implied probability with your own estimate from the pitchers, hitters and park is the whole exercise.
Two sides of the same question always add up to a little more than 100 percent once you convert both prices, and that extra is the market's margin. It is why a first-inning call has to be right noticeably more often than half the time just to break even.
