Thursday Card, Oct 8: Bucs at Cowboys and Four FBS Games

A one-game NFL night, four FBS matchups led by USF at UTSA, and six posted calls on the public ledger. What the model weighs, and what we do not know.

Thursday, October 8, 2026 is a narrow night. The football card is 1 NFL game and 4 FBS games, with the larger weekend boards still ahead. Our posted calls today are all outside football: 1 MLB, 4 NBA and 1 NHL. Every one of them settles on our public, tamper-evident ledger, win or lose, and the record there is the only scorecard we ask anyone to trust.

For reference, today's posted calls, lines only:

- MLB: Under 7.5, Cleveland Guardians @ Chicago White Sox - NBA: Brooklyn Nets +6.5, Philadelphia 76ers @ Brooklyn Nets - NBA: New Orleans Pelicans +8.5, New Orleans Pelicans @ Miami Heat - NBA: Washington Wizards +7.5, Washington Wizards @ New York Knicks - NBA: Sacramento Kings +11.5, Sacramento Kings @ Los Angeles Lakers - NHL: St Louis Blues ML, San Jose Sharks @ St Louis Blues

We have not published a model probability, market price or edge figure for any football game tonight, so none are cited below. Where we have no call, we say so.

College Football

Four FBS games kick off Thursday. The rest of the 58-game college slate, including Texas @ Oklahoma, Florida State @ Louisville and Indiana @ Nebraska, belongs to the weekend and is not addressed here.

South Florida @ UTSA (7:30 p.m., ESPN). The biggest game of the night. UTSA is favored by 7, and USF arrives at 4-1. A 7-point number against a team with one loss is a meaningful statement about home field and roster quality, and it is the kind of number the model tests carefully rather than accepts. We have no posted call on this game.

South Alabama @ Arkansas State. The best storyline on the card. South Alabama is 3-2, and 3-0 on the road. Arkansas State is 2-3, and 2-0 at home. Arkansas State lost 23-20 to Louisiana in a West division game last week, and a second division loss would leave it two games back. Split records like these are small samples: 3 road games and 2 home games do not establish a durable home or road effect, and we treat them as context, not signal. No posted call.

Sam Houston @ Liberty. Sam Houston is 1-3 and still looking for its first FBS win this season. Liberty is 4-1, and its running game has gained over 200 yards per game since the loss to James Madison. That is a real trend over a short window, and the question for any model is how much of it reflects opponent quality. No posted call.

Missouri State @ Western Kentucky. Two struggling teams: Missouri State is 1-3 and WKU is 1-4. Records this poor compress the information available, which raises uncertainty in any projection. No posted call.

We could not confirm injury news for any of these four college games. That is a known gap, and it widens the error bars on every number above.

NFL

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Dallas Cowboys (8:15 p.m., Prime Video). The only NFL game Thursday, and the injury report shapes it more than anything else.

Tampa Bay has ruled out 4 players: quarterback Baker Mayfield (thumb), safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (rib), cornerback Benjamin Morrison (quadricep) and linebacker SirVocea Dennis (ankle, foot). Losing the starting quarterback is the single largest adjustment a model can make to a team's rating, and losing 2 secondary starters and a linebacker compounds it on the defensive side.

For Dallas, guard Tyler Smith is reportedly set to be activated and play after missing the first 4 games with a thumb injury. Receiver Jonathan Mingo missed Wednesday's practice with an illness and is listed questionable.

The remaining 14 NFL games on the slate, from Chicago @ Green Bay to Buffalo @ Los Angeles Rams, are weekend games and outside tonight's scope. We have no posted call on Buccaneers @ Cowboys.

FCS

The FCS slate lists 51 games, including Harvard @ Cornell, Southern Illinois @ South Dakota and Samford @ Chattanooga, but our research found no notable FCS games scheduled for Thursday and no confirmed injury news. We have no FCS calls posted and will not manufacture a read without data.

What the model weighs

In general terms, a sharp model starts with team strength ratings built from play-level efficiency rather than raw records, then adjusts for confirmed availability, with the quarterback weighted most heavily. It discounts small-sample splits like home and road records, accounts for schedule strength, and compares its own number against the market line. A pick is posted only when that gap is large enough to survive the model's own uncertainty. Many nights, including most of tonight's football card, that threshold is not met, and no pick is the correct output.

Every call we post settles publicly on the ledger. Some will lose. That is stated up front, not after the fact.
