Brewers @ Padres NLDS Game 3: Under 7.5 Prediction

Milwaukee leads 2-0 and can close it at Petco. The model projects a 2-1 Padres win and leans Under 7.5. Here are the numbers and the risks.

Two games, two one-run results, seven combined runs per game. Milwaukee won Game 1 3-2 and Game 2 4-3. The Brewers went 103-59 in the regular season and now lead this best-of-five NLDS 2-0. They can finish it tonight at Petco Park, where San Diego (91-71, 51-30 at home) has not lost this October. Nick Pivetta starts for the Padres and Dustin May starts for the Brewers. First pitch is 9:30 PM ET on FS1. Our pick is Under 7.5.

The number

We are publishing the full set of figures, including the ones that complicate the pick.

- Pick: Under 7.5 (game total), line 7.5. - Model probability: n/a. Market-implied probability: n/a. Edge: none published. We are not claiming a quantified edge on this pick, and the ledger will record it that way. - Model total: 8.0, against a market total of 8.5 when the lean was generated. That half-run gap is where the Under lean came from. - Model confidence: 56.7. - Projected result: Padres win 2-1, margin 0.39.

The model's 8.0 total sits above the 7.5 line we are listing. The Under lean was registered against 8.5, and the pick posts at 7.5. A reader comparing those numbers should know that the half-run of cushion we measured against 8.5 does not exist at 7.5. The model's projected scoreline points much lower. Together, the two outputs describe a low-scoring game, but they do not support a precise edge figure. That is why none is listed.

Why the model leans this way

The series has been tight. Both games landed at 5 and 7 total runs, under tonight's number each time. The Game 1 result turned on a ninth-inning drive that the Padres believed was a go-ahead home run, until the American Family Field roof got in the way. Neither lineup has broken a game open in this series.

The offense ratings are modest on both sides. The engine rates San Diego at 42.0 and Milwaukee at 39.2. Neither number marks a lineup the model expects to string together a crooked inning.

The park is neutral. Petco's park factor in our engine is 1.0. The model is not adding or removing runs for the venue. The lean comes from the teams and pitchers, not the setting.

The projected score. The engine's most likely outcome is a 2-1 Padres win with a 0.39-run margin. That fits the tone of this series so far: a one-run game that could swing either way, low on the scoreboard.

The starting pitchers. Pivetta has allowed a 2.70 ERA across 3.1 postseason innings, with 3 hits, 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. We could not confirm Dustin May's most recent outings. His inputs carry more uncertainty than Pivetta's, and we would rather say so than fill the gap.

Form context. The Brewers enter on five straight wins. Both clubs went 8-2 over their last 10. The engine's form input lists San Diego at two straight wins. That figure does not match the Padres' two NLDS losses, and we flag it as a likely timing artifact rather than lean on it. The regular-season series split 3-3, with each side winning at home. That points to two evenly matched clubs, which tends to favor tight, lower-scoring games.

The case against

This is a single game with a short line, and several realistic paths beat it.

- Pivetta's length. One preview notes he has not reached the sixth inning since his elbow strain. If he exits after four or five, San Diego's bullpen has to cover at least four innings in an elimination game. ESPN lists reliever Jeremiah Estrada on the 15-day IL, which thins that group. Bullpen-heavy games are where totals tend to climb late.

- Milwaukee's momentum. A 103-win club on a five-game win streak with a chance to close out is not a lineup to dismiss. Their offense rating trails San Diego's by only 2.8 points.

- San Diego at home. The Padres are unbeaten at Petco this postseason and swept Milwaukee in three games there in August. A desperate home lineup can produce a crooked number, and one four-run inning can decide an Under 7.5 almost alone.

- The May unknown. Without confirmed recent outings for May, Milwaukee's side of the pitching projection rests on thinner information.

- Ordinary variance. At 7.5, an 8-run game such as 5-3 or 6-2 loses the pick. These are common baseball scores. Even in a series that has stayed at 5 and 7 runs, a result like that in any given game should be expected well over a third of the time.

The honest summary: a lean toward a low-scoring game, a 56.7 confidence reading, and no published edge. If it misses, the ledger will show it plainly.
